Barnakustica & Cumie record music for the next film by
Director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Grams, Amores Perros)
What a cool experience! Ubjk (sax player/band webmaster) received the call in Barcelona that a production company wanted us to record for an upcoming movie being made partly in Barcelona.
The funny thing is that we weren't sure exactly what they wanted ~ we thought we were most likely going to be a band in the background of a movie scene & they might not even want us to make music on set. When we arrived at the given address, it was a fab sound recording studio ~ and we thought, 'Oh sh*t! We have to actually play well & sound our best !!'
Turns out they wanted sounds from Europe, China, and Africa for this 2009 film with the working title "Biutiful" (Spanish phonetic spelling of Beautiful).. Well, as far as I know, we don't have a Chinese sound, but Eur-African is a perfect fit !
Could be rumour, but it seems we were the first group to record in the studio, Central Art Process (Cerdanyola, Catalunya). The studio managers, Mario, Tchoumo "Xumo" & Alexander, are very nice, cool guys who made us feel at home. Guiding the recording was the super-cool, L.A. based sound engineer, Gustavo Santaolalla.
The best part was that Gustavo simply said, "Do whatever you guys do". So, we improvised a subtle, yet full-bodied rhythmic progression with Hang drums, tenor sax, sitar, percussion & voice. Nacho & Mauro (Hang drummers) play off of each other very well.. Ubjk (sax) played with a tender, light touch & Paolo (sitar) is always in his element. I sang a range of soft, ethereal tones (vocalese) and rhythmic voice (Konnakol + some African words).
Gustavo & the studio guys liked what they were hearing very much & asked us to do more improvising. At the very end, Nacho & Mauro recorded some naked Hang drum sounds, including long-sustain strokes, for sound FX moments in the film.
I would like to have belted out some ultra-dynamic singing for cathartic moments in the film, but that wasn't the mood we were recording for.. And I am very happy with the feeling, passion & excellence we created. Xumo says the sound of the music was very "elegant".
Half-way through our recording session, Director Alejandro González Iñárritu himself arrived at the studio, carrying big energy with him. He seems quite congenial, stylish and ever-ready to do creative work.. Good combo.
Our time slot was ending, the Chinese musicians were arriving & it was time to for us to wrap. You never know what will make the final cut, and what will be given purely to the Akasha... What I do know is that it was an enlivening experience. I am thankful.

Director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Gramos, Amores Perros)
¡Qué experiencia más guay! Ubjk (saxo tenor/webmaster) recibió la llamada en Barcelona que una empresa productura nos quería grabar para la próxima película que se realizan en parte en Barcelona.
Es gracioso que no sabíamos exactamente que querían ~ pensábamos que era más probable somos una banda en el fondo de una escena de la película y que incluso que no querían nada de sonido actual. Cuando llegamos al sitio, era un estudio de grabación fabulosa y pensábamos, '¡Ay! ¡Tenemos que tocar realmente bien!'
Resulta que lo que querían eran sonidos de Europa, China y África para esta película de 2009 con el título de trabajo de "Biutiful".. Bueno, que yo sepa, no tenemos un buen sonido Chino, ¡pero Euro-África nos encaja perfectamente bien!
Puede ser un rumor, pero parece que fuimos el primer grupo de grabar en el estudio, Central Art Process (Cerdanyola, Catalunya). Los managers, Mario, Tchoumo "Xumo" y Alexander, son muy amables y nos hicieron sentir como en casa. El ingeniero de sonido de Los Angeles, Gustavo Santaolalla, es muy simpático y capaz.
La mejor parte es que Gustavo simplemente nos dijo: "Haced lo que haceis". Así pues, hicimos una improvisación sutil, pero con cuerpo, de una progresión rítmica con los tambores Hang, saxo tenor, sitar, percusión y voz. Nacho y Mauro (percusionistas del Hang) tocan muy bien entre ellos.. Ubjk (saxo) tocó con mucha sensibilidad y cariño y Paolo (sitar) siempre está en su elemento. Yo canté tonos suaves y expansivos (vocalese) y voz rítmica (Konnakol y algunas palabras Áfricanas).
A Gustavo y los chicos del estudio les gusto mucho lo que escuchaban y Gustavo nos pidió que hiciéramos más improvisación. Al final, Nacho y Mauro tocaron los Hangs un poco más, incluyendo golpes individuales muy largos, para efectos de sonido en la película.
Me hubiera gustado cantar algo muy fuerte y ultra-dinámico para momentos catárticos en la película, pero no estábamos grabando para eso.. y estoy muy contenta por el feeling, pasión y excelencia que hemos creado. Xumo dice que el sonido de la música era muy "elegante".
En el medio de nuestra sesión de grabación, llegó Director Alejandro González Iñárritu al estudio, con una presencia/energía grande. Parece agradable, estiloso y siempre dispuesto a hacer trabajo creativo.. Buena combinación.
Nuestro tiempo alocado era al final, los músicos chinos llegaban y tuvemos que terminar la sesión. Nunca sabes qué va a lograr el corte final, ni lo que te das solo para la Akasha ... Lo que sé de verdad es que fue una experiencia que me ha dado mucho ánimo. Estoy agradecida.
